Understanding Certificates of Veterinarian Inspection (Health Certificates)

A certificate of veterinarian inspection (CVI) is required by states for travel between states (interstate travel) and in some cases, travel within a state (intrastate travel). A certificate of veterinary inspection, also called a health certificate, ensures that your livestock/pet has been checked recently by a veterinarian and that the animal at the time of inspection showed no indications of illness.

At Vet Sentry, we help speed of the process of producing certificates of veterinarian inspection.

Why are CVIs Required?

Certificates of veterinarian inspection are required documents that help mitigate the spread of disease between livestock animals. An animal inspection for illness conducted by a veterinarian may find subtle or obvious signs of disease that may not have been otherwise discovered. Various types of diseases than can be found through these inspections include vesicular stomatitis, strangles, brucellosis, rabies, equine infections anemia, piroplasmosis, and herpesvirus- 1 and -4. The requirements and length of time these inspections remain valid are determined by each state. A certificate of veterinary inspection often expires at the end of 30 days. However, some states may extend the validity of the inspection for up to six months.

Contents of CVIs

From state to state, certificates of veterinarian inspection may look a little different. However, generally the following information will be included on all CVIs:

  1. Place of origin: Contact name, phone, location, and email
  2. Destination information: Point of contact, email, phone, and location
  3. Transport information: Reason for movement, date
  4. Identifiable factors of livestock: breed, age, color, sex, permanent ID (tattoo, microchip)
  5. Veterinarian information: Clinic, name, address, accreditation number
  6. Certificate of veterinary inspection information: Number, date of issue
  7. Test info for infectious anemia (EIA): Test date, test results, lab where test was performed, lab ID number

CVI requirements depend on each state, current disease conditions, and show or destination.
