What is the Difference Between an eCVI and ICVI?

Interstate certificates of veterinary inspection (ICVI) are a valuable tool in the effort to preserve the health of animals and livestock in the United States. These ICVIs are governed by the states to superintend the transport of animals between states, react efficiently and promptly to animal health concerns, and enforce applicable regulations. The main purpose of ICVIs is to establish documentation of the health condition of animals and provide effective traceability. As explained below, an eCVI is just a particular form of an ICVI – eCVI meaning electronic certificate of veterinary inspection. At Vet Sentry, we offer a way to obtain CVIs in a highly efficient manner through electronic means instead of traditional paper means.

ICVIs

Also referred to as health certificates, ICVIs are official documents sent by veterinarians that confirm they have conducted proper inspections on the listed animals and have fulfilled the requirements for their transport and movement. Interstate and international transport of animals require ICVIS. Many in-state events also require CVIs.

Beyond verifying that animals have fulfilled certain health requirements, ICVIs also include information about the age, species, purpose of movement, origin, and destination of the animals. Certain treatments, tests, or vaccinations may be required before this health certificate may be completed and recognized as official. It is important to check with the states in question about their specific animal import regulations.

ECVIs

Many states now offer electronic CVIs (or eCVIs). This is a fillable PDF form with a similar appearance of a paper CVI form. It helps the veterinarian fill out the form more efficiently through the use of drop-down menus. The form is signed digitally and then sent by email to the required state animal health department. It allows for a faster process overall than the use of paper CVI forms.

Usually, the same day it is received, the origin state forwards the eCVI to the destination state. These forms are designed such that the information in them is easily obtained and uploaded without the need for adding data into the animal disease traceability databases.

At Vet Sentry, we offer a highly efficient means of producing veterinary inspection certificates in electronic form – the eCVI. For more information, call us today at 320.216.7617 send an email to scott@Vet-Sentry.com.
